It was with great sadness that we learned of Prof. Arjen Hoekstra's sudden passing on 18 November 2019.
Arjen Hoekstra joined IHE Delft Institute for Water Education in 1999, in the Department of Environment and Water Resources. In 2001 he became head of the new Environmental Resources Department. In 2004, Arjen succeeded Johan Rockstrom as WaterNet advisor in Harare, Zimbabwe. He left IHE Delft in February 2005 when he was appointed Professor of Water Management at the University of Twente.
We remember Arjen as a highly valued, ground-breaking and socially committed scientist. He was energetic, inspiring and focused.
Arjen has made a significant contribution to the interdisciplinary nature of the Environmental Science MSc programme and co-initiated the Environment Planning and Management specialisation. Arjen supervised many MSc students and several PhD fellows at IHE Delft.
He can be regarded as the father of the water footprint, with which he has influenced the global water agenda and raised awareness of the influence of consumption patterns on global water availability.
Arjen also left an indelible mark on IHE Delft.
We find it hard to understand that Arjen is no longer there.
We wish his family and friends a lot of strength in bearing this great loss.
