Webinar: QGIS for water modellers


Learn how to apply free GIS applications and plugins to aid the development and animation of hydrologic and hydraulic models.


IHE Delft's senior lecturer Hans Van der Kwast will be part of this webinar on "QGIS for water modellers". Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used by water modellers as a tool for analysing satellite images, mapping of river basins, pre- and post-processing of model data and visualisation of model outputs. QGIS, a popular Open Source GIS, offers a lot of useful tools for water modellers. In addition to its core functionality there are many useful plugins developed for hydrological and hydraulic applications.

In this webinar, you’ll see live demonstrations of:

  • MDAL: GIS beyond vector and raster
  • MDAL integration with QGIS
  • Using the mesh layer and Crayfish plugin for animating 2D flood models, including HEC-RAS 2D, TUFLOW, AnuGA, and more!

The webinar will also give an overview of educational resources for learning and exploring the tools in QGIS for water modellers.

About the speakers

Senior lecturer, Hans van der Kwast, in ecohydrological modelling. Hans holds a PhD in Physical Geography. During his previous work at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) in Belgium he participated in projects related to water quality modelling, land-use change modelling and the use of remote sensing for urban applications. Since 2012 he has worked at IHE Delft, the largest international graduate education institute in the field of water. In his teaching and capacity-development projects he actively promotes the use of open source tools and open data by young professionals from the water sector in the Global South. For this purpose he has developed free and commercial educational products. He co-authored the book QGIS for Hydrological Applications.

Krey Price, is educated at the University of California at Berkeley, Krey is a civil engineer and project manager with international experience in water resources. He is engaged in computational modelling, engineering design, and project management for flood mitigation, mine rehabilitation, river and wetland restoration, stormwater management and catchment assessment projects. Krey’s specialties include: 2D hydraulic modelling, bridge and culvert replacement, bank stabilisation, landform design, mine closure, coastal engineering, river mechanics, environmental restoration, geomorphic design, fish passage, and dam decommissioning. Krey has extensive software development and lecturing experience; his career includes 15 years developing hydraulic models for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and he has recently provided training to over 500 course attendees using the newly released HEC-RAS 5.0 software.

Saber Razmjooei, is the Managing Director, Lutra Consulting. Saber holds an Msc in Water Resource Engineering. He worked in the water sector in the UK for 10 years, before starting Lutra Consulting. Lutra is one of the core developers of QGIS, a free and open source GIS application. In addition to their contribution to QGIS, Lutra has developed a number of services and applications.
