Online Course on Sanitation and Public Health
This course is designed to give participants an in-depth understanding of the links between sanitation and public health.
For whom?
This course is designed for those with an interest in onsite sanitation and public health such as practitioners, academicians, consultants, researchers, students and representatives from NGOs.
Prerequisites
While there is not a strict prerequisite to undertaking this course is recommended that the participants have clear concepts on Microbiology (first-year undergraduate level, eg. classification of microbial life, autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms, growth requirements etc. ). - Identify disease and transmission routes associated with human excreta
- Identify the range of health hazards related to human excreta in communities
- Evaluate the control of health hazards associated with human excreta
Course content
The following themes are covered in this online course: human health hazards related to excreta, pathogens and transmission routes associated with human excreta, non-infectious health issues related to sanitation, and control measures to protect public health. This course also includes case studies of sanitation intervention trials and workshops on the most up-to-date risk evaluation tools such as Sanitation Safety Plans and SaniPath.

Silvia Bentancur Caballero earns PhD for research on phosphorus removal efficiency
On 24 June, Silvia Bentancur Caballero from Uruguay defended her PhD thesis on the evaluation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the UPM pulp industry in her country to improve phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. She has been awarded a doctoral degree for her research. Her promotors are Professor Damir Brdjanovic and Prof. Hector Garcia Hernandez and her copromotor Dr. Carlos Lopez Vazquez.
