Biography

Francesco Bregoli is an experienced researcher that has recently joined the River Basin Development Chair Group of the Water Science & Engineering department.

In 2008 he received the MSc in Environmental Engineering at the University of Florence (Italy). Than he moved to Barcelona (Spain) where, after a period in an engineering consultancy firm, he enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Civil Engineering of the Technical University of Catalonia within the Sediment Transport Research Group. There he conducted laboratory experiments in river sediment transport, landslides and landslide tsunamis and he implemented physical-based models to predict debris flows hazard. He completed his training with an internship in the Georgia Institute of Technology (US). In 2015 he obtained the PhD and successively joined the Catalan Institute for Water Research as postdoctoral researcher in River Resources and Ecosystems.

During his research he has been dedicated to understanding how to protect population, territory and ecosystem from different threats, following a multidisciplinary path through civil and environmental engineering and ecology. His interests embrace several topics such as natural hazards including floods, landslides, debris flows and landslide tsunamis as well as human-induced hazards as pollution in river networks aggravated by global population growth and climate changes.

In March 2017 Francesco has joined IHE-Delft thanks to the Experienced Water Postdoc Fellowship COFUND Programme. He will study and modelling the role of fine sediments on river morphodynamics including the effect of sediments input discontinuity on morphology and ecosystem of rivers affected by dam operations.
