2020 edition online

This course will be offered in an online format due to Covid-19 restrictions. The course's duration, content and learning objectives will remain unchanged, while the course fee is lower. You can contact the course coordinator for more information about the new -temporary- format of the course.

For whom?

Students of Water Science and Engineering taught course

Professionals who work in River flow analysis and river flood related aspects.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of hydraulics of open channel flow

Dates, Fee, ECTS

Start: 11 October 2021
End: 15 October 2021
Deadline IHE application: 10 September 2021 - 23.59 (CET)
Course fee: € 1000

VAT is not included in the course fee

Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  1. Learn how to solve by numerical approximation equations of open channel flow
  2. Understand basic principles of modelling 1D and 1D/2D river flow
  3. Ability to build a river model using HEC-RAS
  4. Ability to interpret results of a river flow model

HEC-RAS is a software program that models hydrodynamics of flow in a river and/or channel. It is used to determine if for a given discharge the flow exceeds the river bank levels. Flooding studies can be carried out to determine the flood extent and volume.

Prerequisites

It is expected that participants have good computer skills and basic knowledge of hydraulics.

Course content

  1. Introduction to river flow routing;
  2. Basic equations of unsteady flow in rivers;
  3. Introduction to HEC-RAS. Modelling capabilities;
  4. Modelling Floods using HEC-RAS;
  5. Structures;
  6. Modelling dam breaks.

Methods

  • Lectures;
  • Computer exercises.
