Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  1. Learn how to solve by numerical approximation equations of open channel flow
  2. Understand basic principles of modelling 1D and 1D/2D river flow
  3. Ability to build a river model using HEC-RAS
  4. Ability to interpret results of a river flow model

HEC-RAS is a software program that models hydrodynamics of flow in a river and/or channel. It is used to determine if for a given discharge the flow exceeds the river bank levels. Flooding studies can be carried out to determine the flood extent and volume.


It is expected that participants have good computer skills and basic knowledge of hydraulics.

  1. Introduction to river flow routing;
  2. Basic equations of unsteady flow in rivers;
  3. Introduction to HEC-RAS. Modelling capabilities;
  4. Modelling Floods using HEC-RAS;
  5. Structures;
  6. Modelling dam breaks.
