Ms. Jakia Akter has received her BSc and MSc in Water Resources Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 2003 and 2010 respectively. She has been working in Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), a public trust under the Ministry of Water Resources since 2005. Before that she was involved with University of Asia Pacific and Bangladesh Language Center as Research Associate and Faculty Manager.
Presently she is working as a Specialist in River, Delta and Coastal Morphology Division of CEGIS. She worked a number of research and study projects in Bangladesh. For example, Haor Master Plan, National Water Resources Database (NWRD), Integrated Coastal Resources Database (ICRD), Chittagong Hill Tracts Natural Resources Management (CHARM), Developing database and drafting books namely ‘Rivers of Bangladesh’, Geo-morphological & Planform Studies of many rivers in connection with Capital Dredging and Sustainable River Management, Construction of River Crossing and Improve the navigability of several tens of rivers in Bangladesh.
She was also involved in preparing Position Papers showing sustainable water sharing options of common/border rivers with India. She has experience working with GIS/RS and modelling (MIKE-11, SOBEK and Delft3D). She has also research experiences in exploring historical evolution of rivers and deltas using Paleo-geographic and historical maps and time series satellite images. She has attended several national and international seminars and conferences. She has a few publications in journals and conference proceedings. Ms Akter is also co-author of a book titled ‘Restoration of Navigability and Integrated Water Resources Management’, published by Academic Foundation, Delhi, India and IUCN.
Ms Akter has started her PhD research at IHE Delft in March 2014. Her research work focuses on "Decade to Century Scale Geo-morphological Development of the Bangladesh Delta”. Her research is funded by the NUFFIC-NICHE/BD/155 Project.
