Every year, many ships are being produced all over the world, some become obsolete and need to be dismantled. There is a growing industry of shipbreaking that contributes both to the ability of countries to recycle valuable metals but also externalizes social and ecological impacts. Hence, my thesis will address the governance in terms of law and policy of the ship-breaking industry. Bangladesh has been chosen as a case study country due to its large ship-breaking industry. My expected results will focus on a thorough assessment of the costs and benefits of this industry; a comparative analysis of laws and policies at the global level and in different parts of the world; an in-depth analysis of the situation in Bangladesh and how it can be improved; and conclusions regarding the global trade in this industry.
