Mapping

Mapping is an integral part of monitoring as it allows to have a synoptic, and multitemporal view of the landscape and of all its different components. At the River Basin Development group we use Remote Sensing mainly with freely available datasets and software, to map and monitor water resources, ecosystems, land cover changes, and other land properties.

We make use of state of the art tool like Object Based Image Analyses (mainly eCognition and Orfeo Toolbox), and Structure from Motion methods (Agisoft Photoscan Pro and Metashape, and Pix4D) for the analyses of drone images and deriving DEM, DTM and Orthophoto that are then analyzed to extract meaningful information. We have contributed to several projects ranging from Environmental Flow Assessment in the Kilombero river basin, to the Wetland Assessment of the Mara river delta Wetland to mapping groundwater potential in a province of Thailand.

More recently we also develop training and use in projects of Google Earth Engine to map and monitor changes at a regional scale. In particular we are using this tool for a project on the Western Indian Ocean River Deltas (Wioder project), that is a collaboration between the French IRD, the Canadian IDRC, IHE Delft, the University of Southampton (UK), the University of Maputo (UEM), Dar es Salaam, and the Museum of Kenya and the IRD Institute in Madagascar.

We also carry on projects and training using drones also called Unmanned Aerial Systems or Vehicles (UAS or UAV). We have implemented UAS based projects or training in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Mozambique. Our focus has been on various aspects: from multitemporal and hyperspatial resolution mapping of the ecosystems of the Mara wetland in Tanzania (with the local Water User Association, and WWF), to mapping the fine topographic features of a stretch of the Limpopo River in Mozambique to assess its potential for flood modelling (with Universidade Eduardo Mondlane UEM and the Wioder project), to mapping urban low income neighborhoods in the context of a Child Protection project (with the UEM and UNICEF). We participated to a H2020 project called SCENT focusing on Citizen Science for environmental and flood monitoring under which we carried out extensive UAS mapping of the Danube delta and of the river basin upstream of Athens.

We also carry on mapping of mountain environments when we take our students to the field work in Digne les Bains, in Southern France. And we do use digital Structure from Motion for digital sieving of mountain river beds in the Alps, within an ongoing PhD project.
