We are sad to report that Luis Ribeiro, one of the Erasmus Mundus GroundwatCh coordinators in Lisbon, passed away on 3 April 2020, 64 years young. He worked as a partner with IHE Delft for the last seven years, and in previous collaborations with IHE staff for the past 20 years. His contribution to the GroundwatCh MSc programme and other collaborative initiatives with the Institute was invaluable.
Luis was Associate Professor at the Instituto Superior Tecnico, in Lisbon, and had an intense activity in the field of hydrogeology, forming new generations of Portuguese and international hydrogeologists. He was strongly involved in educational, advisory and research projects on technical and social aspects of groundwater hydrology and resources management in Portugal and several Latin American countries, such as Colombia, Peru, Ecuador and Chile. Besides his enthusiasm for science, Luis had profound knowledge and passion for art, history, classical music, film and theatre, areas in which he continued to be very active. Moreover, he loved linking these different themes and passions. His latest interest and research involved “revisiting ancestral groundwater techniques in a context of climate change”, for which he had recently submitted an ERC Advanced Grant Research proposal.
Luis will be remembered as a brilliant mind and a beautiful emotional person. Many of us have had the privilege to know him and learn from him, at both a professional and personal level, and will cherish that forever. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Luis’s wife Fatima and his son Miguel at this tragic time.
