The European Commission's Directorate-General for International cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) organised on 25-26 January 2018, in Brussels, the WEFE NEXUS - SDGs Position Paper Workshop. This project, which is part of the “EC NEXUS Dialogue – Phase I (2016-2018)” had the objective to validate and contribute to a draft report setting a framework for operationalising the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus outside the European Union.
A wide range of water-related organizations including IHE Delft, constituted the core group of participants at the workshop. This group contributed short papers under the four themes of the project:
•Governance and Institutions
•WEF Nexus tools/models/data,
•Sustainable Technological Approaches
•Solutions and Nexus Investment and Financing
The compiling of this expertise will be used to better support institutions and organizations carrying out WEFE Nexus practices by addressing their needs and challenges, which is particularly essential in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
Capucine Dupont and Miroslav Marence from IHE Delft were among this core group of contributors. Dr. Dupont presented her and Prof. Hullebusch's paper on "The potential of biomass agricultural waste recovery as biochar in Western Africa". Miroslav Marence presented his, Mario Franca's and Sengi Lemessa Tesgera's paper on "Towards the circularization of the energy cycle by implementation of hydroelectricity production in existing hydraulic systems".
The Position Paper "Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems (WEFE) Nexus and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)" provides support to EC DG DEVCO for the second phase of the Nexus Dialogues project. It serves as a framework document for governments, ministries and other important policy actors and organisations which are implementing, or are willing to implement, WEF Nexus to enhance environmental protection, as well as other social and economic challenges.
The final version of the Position Paper has been published in May 2019 and can be downloaded here.
