Nature-based solutions to adapt to climate change in North Sea Region

NEXT LEVEL conference

Western Europe
Dordrecht, The Netherlands

The climate crisis is impacting cities and communities across the globe. As extreme weather events become increasingly frequent, cities must work together to find effective nature-based solutions (NBS) to adapt to their changing climates. The NEXT LEVEL 2021 conference, to be held 20 October in the Dutch city of Dordrecht will bring together participants from 10 cities in six countries in the North Sea Region discuss how cities can handle climate-related challenges.

This hybrid event is the culmination of BEGIN, an urban innovation project funded by the Interreg North Sea Region Programme of the European Union. Since 2016, ten cities and six research institutes have co-developed Blue and Green Infrastructure (BGI) solutions and exchanged best practices to better deal with extreme weather events, enhance climate adaptation, and improve the use and design of BGI through social innovation within their urban areas. Now, these partners are looking to take their work to the next level with exciting new ideas and collaborations.

"In our common quest to adapt cities to manage a changing climate, we are facing an ever-increasing complexity. While we expect our cities to cope with extreme weather events we also want them to provide a multitude of other qualities that may not always coincide. In BEGIN, 10 cities have been learning from each other how to accommodate these challenges in innovative multi-functional projects. Now it is time to bring those approaches to the next level together with new partners. The Next Level 2021-conference aims to provide such a platform" says Dr. William Veerbeek, researcher in urban climate adaptation at IHE Delft and one of the moderators in the conference.

Keynote speeches will be delivered by Senator Dr. Anjes Tjarks, City of Hamburg; Dr. Ir. Robert Snep, Wageningen University; Mckenna Davis, Ecologic Institute; Paul Sayers, Director of Sayers and Partners; and Jens Thoms Ivarsson, City of Gothenburg. The conference also features four workshops:

  • Climate Adaptation and NBS
  • People, Society and NBS
  • Health, Wellbeing and NBS
  • Multifunctional and Multi-benefit NBS

Early registration is encouraged due to limited space.
