Online Course on Water Resources for Agricultural Uses

This online course provides a concise introduction to catchment hydrological processes covering both surface and groundwater systems. It gives a particular focus on water resources assessment in a catchment from the perspective of agricultural water use.

Prerequisites

BSc or equivalent in water resources, hydrology, civil engineering, agricultural engineering or closely related fields.

Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  1. Describe fundamental hydrological processes and catchment water balance.
  2. Interpret hydrological time series data and carry out commonly required analyses.
  3. Estimate evapotranspiration and water demands for selected crops.
  4. Identify groundwater occurrence, flow and storage, estimate groundwater recharge and compute groundwater balance.
  5. Analyse groundwater flow to pumping wells in aquifers.
  6. Formulate plans for groundwater development.

Course content

  1. Catchment hydrological processes: Hydrological cycle, precipitation to runoff processes, catchment water balance
  2. Hydrological data analysis: precipitation, discharge
  3. Evapotranspiration, soil water and crop water demand
  4. Groundwater resources assessment: Aquifer and parameters, groundwater movement, groundwater balance
  5. Groundwater flow analysis: steady-state groundwater flow to pumping wells in acquires
  6. Groundwater resources development: assessment of groundwater resources availability and formulation of plans for sustainable development
