OOC Advanced Topics in Freshwater Health

This online course series explores the multiple social-ecological dimensions of freshwater health and introduces the Freshwater Health Index as an open-source and freely available tool to examine water systems. Participants should go away with an appreciation of freshwater ecosystems, the contributions they provide, the threats they face, consequences for health, and approaches for their management. The online course "Advanced topics in Freshwater Health" is the second course of this series and will focus on the practical application of these concepts to watersheds.

Practitioners, policymakers, and informed stakeholders directly or indirectly involved (or interested) in protecting or restoring freshwater health through improved management of freshwater basins.

Learning Objectives

After this course you will be able to:

  • Develop a framework of analysis for freshwater health based on social-ecological principles.
  • Determine the key conditions that influence the vitality of freshwater ecosystems.
  • Explain the production and sustainability of freshwater ecosystem services.
  • Assess the role of water governance in shaping freshwater health.
  • Measure the state of and changes to freshwater ecosystems, services they provide and their governance, using indicators of the Freshwater Health Index.

Working Method

This is a self-paced course, but the interaction between participants is encouraged using the Introductory Forum on the "Start Here" tab.

For each topic, participants will watch an interactive lecture, read relevant literature, and complete practical exercises. Automated quizzes will help participants to assess their progress toward the learning objectives.


Step 0. Have you already created an account to access IHE Delft Open Education?
If you created an account to access one of our open courses in the past, you can use the same username and password to login. Then, go to Step 2 - Register/Enrol Yourself in the Course. If you created an account in the past, but forgot your password, click on “Forgot Password?”. 

Step 1. Create a New Account in the IHE Open Education website
Click on Create New Account, fill in your username, password etc., an 'account confirmation' email will be sent to you (check also in your spam e-mailbox, particularly if you have a Gmail account), use the 'web address' received to confirm your new account and login using your username and password

Step 2. Register/enrol yourself in the course
Click on the title, click on 'Enrol me in this course' (under the arrow in the upper right side/below your username), click on 'Enrol me' in the page 'Enrolment options' to complete the process (the course coordinator will send you a 'welcome' email and your name will be listed as course participant).
