Blue Green Infrastructure through social innovation
6.200.000 project budget
Sep 2016 - Jul 2020
Partners: Dordrecht, IenM, Erasmus Univ
Donor: European Commission
Donor Programme: Interreg North Sea Region ERDF
BEGIN will bring together 9 representative medium-sized cities and 4 leading research institutes from the North Sea Region that are either frontrunners in this topic, or are planning deep investments in a near future, during BEGIN.
The project will implement, develop and mainstream new methods of deploying nature-based solutions in an urban environment. BEGIN will directly counteract current barriers to implementation such as lack of sufficient technical knowledge on a city level, whether in terms of design or in modelling benefits. Also in terms of finance, new business models will be shared and put forward, involving new stakeholders (until now absent) and also crowd sourcing and getting support on a non-monetary basis. In terms of governance BEGIN will re-frame the current disintegrated policy investments in infrastructure in to a mainstream approach to investment in BGI. Finally from a social level, the project aims to go further from raising awareness to actually involving and empowering citizens on developing, implementing and maintaining their own solutions.
