Summer Course - Nature Based Solutions in Water Management

Get introduced to the basic design and operation principles of Nature Based Solutions and apply these principles in a concrete context (e.g. related to your home country).

For whom?

Summer courses at IHE Delft are for advanced students and professionals in the water and related sectors.

Course content

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) is an emerging concept. It covers a range of approaches and technologies, which use natural processes to address societal challenges. Of particular relevance are applications in the field of water management, such as in coastal/river flood protection, water resources management, stormwater management, water supply, wastewater treatment and pollution prevention.

Their success is related to good performance on primary objectives, co-benefits for other purposes and (in many cases) low operation and maintenance costs. Nature-Based Solutions, when well designed, will result in multiple benefits for the environment, society, and economy. They can also promote a green and circular economy because they close the loop of water management and make connections between healthy ecosystems and social/economic development challenges.

In these summer courses, the concept of Nature Based Solutions with its basic design and operation principles will be introduced. The application of these principles will be demonstrated for the different fields of water management. Moreover, real-life case studies of Nature Based Solutions will be presented to you during the course. These summer courses will also give you an opportunity to implement the knowledge directly by working in teams on a design of an application in a concrete context. In this “learning by design” exercise, you are challenged to apply the NBS principles using a real-life case study from your home country. Furthermore, you should present and discuss your design and underlying motivation and application of these principles.

Why join this program?

  • Opportunity to implement the knowledge directly through a workshop
  • Take a chance to visit a leading institution on Nature-Based Solutions
  • To expand your professional network from all the world

Student experiences

“My expectation was to learn about new innovative options to incorporate and use nature as a solution to flooding. After this course, I feel inspired to implement and advocate the measures learned. In particular, I would like to further explore stormwater recycling for essential water uses.” Adele Young, MSc Hydraulic Engineering & River Basin Development

“It was a nice experience. I learnt some new issues especially with the coastal engineering. Somethings were repeated which I felt because I come from a scientist background. Somethings were clarified better especially with Ecosystem Services which I got to understand better. And I think it’s the way forward to go.” Edmond Mutugi Mugambi, MSc Urban Water and Sanitation
