Summer Course - Serious Gaming for the Water Sector

Get introduced to different types of games, develop your own game and learn to facilitate a gaming workshop using the game you have developed. All components of the course will focus on the philosophy of “Triadic game design”, which is about balancing elements of fun, meaning and reality in the game.

Learning objectives

Upon completion, the participant should be able to:
  1. Identify opportunities to innovate with serious games in their professional life
  2. Analyse serious games using the Triadic Game Design theoretical framework
  3. Select appropriate serious gaming methodologies
  4. Design a game outline
  5. Feel confident to implement and facilitate sessions using serious gaming

Course content

During the course the participants will be introduced to different types of games, and explore how these can be used to reach their own objectives. They will then receive an introduction into game development, where they will develop their own game using templates and examples of other experiences. They will change the decisions, the players face during the game and the indicators they are given for feedback. On the last day, they will facilitate a gaming session using their game and play a game created by other participants. The course closes with a discussion of the different results obtained and next steps.
