What drives you to follow this study programme?
I come from Kenya and live in Nairobi. I like applied research and I have great interest for irrigation and drainage. Agriculture is the backbone of our economy but its dependence on rainfall makes it susceptible to changing weather patterns. I chose this programme because I want to contribute to a food secure Kenya by equipping myself with skills that would enable me provide water solutions for agriculture. I have been able to learn a lot through lectures, interaction with fellow students and field excursions that are routinely organised during the study programme.
What moment of your study at IHE will you remember for a long time?
I will remember our field trip to Nebraska, United States. Through the fieldwork, we were exposed to innovative water solutions for agriculture. We were able to conduct field experiments that covered the entire system in irrigation from the intake works (water abstraction) to the water management at field level which was a great practical learning experience. We also visited pump manufactures, centre pivot manufactures and subsurface drip installation company. Despite the busy schedule we had fun in Lincoln, where we even created time to watch a baseball game, which was a first time experience for most of us.
Why should a new student choose this programme?
The Netherlands is the best country in water management and you learn from the best!
Land and water development is a well-structured course that will provide you with the knowledge and skills to solve water problems in agriculture.
We are taught by experienced lecturers from all over the world who not only have experience in teaching but also in the field. The training is thorough, and you will get value for your time here. Though the schedule is tight, you will get the most out your 18 months. Most of the students have worked in different capacities in the water sector and we also learn a lot from each other.
How do you find studying in Delft in the Netherlands?
I find studying in IHE Delft interesting as we get to interact with people from different backgrounds and from different parts of the world. The people are welcoming and easy to interact with. Delft is a great city too with old historical buildings that that you can enjoy walking around when free. Initially, it was difficult to adjust to the weather as it was quite cold during winter but gradually we got used to. I miss my family the most and I can’t wait to join them after completing my studies.
