Small Island Developing States (SIDS) Mapathon

Participants discussing the outline of a map

On 20 June IHE Delft, UNESCO and Antea Group Belgium are hosting a Mapathon to map Small Islands Developing States in cooperation with the Red Cross. During the Mapathon, volunteers from all over the world are invited to join IHE Delft students, staff, alumni to map areas based on satellite images.

Importance of mapping for humanitarian help

By mapping vulnerable areas that are affected by climate change, such as small island developing states (SIDS), you can help governments and aid organizations like the Red Cross provide better emergency assistance. Mapping helps to identify the locations of buildings, roads, water sources, health facilities, and other essential infrastructure. Mapping also helps to monitor the situation and improve vital services. By joining a Mapathon, you can contribute to the augmentation of the world map on open sources maps and make a difference for the people in need.

The Mapathon, which will be held at IHE Delft as well as online, is a free event.
