Sebrian Beselly earns PhD for research that can help mangrove restoration succeed
On 12 July, Sebrian Beselly from Indonesia defended his PhD thesis on simulating mangrove forest growth and expansion. He presented a method to model mangrove forests’ trajectory and wetland development, which eventually can make mangrove restoration projects more likely to succeed. His promotor is Professor Dano Roelvink and his co-promotor Associate Professor Mick van der Wegen. Dr. Sebrian Beselly, who was awarded a doctoral degree for his research, shared a few insights as he embarks on a new chapter of his life.

Silvia Bentancur Caballero earns PhD for research on phosphorus removal efficiency
On 24 June, Silvia Bentancur Caballero from Uruguay defended her PhD thesis on the evaluation of the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of the UPM pulp industry in her country to improve phosphorus (P) removal efficiency. She has been awarded a doctoral degree for her research. Her promotors are Professor Damir Brdjanovic and Prof. Hector Garcia Hernandez and her copromotor Dr. Carlos Lopez Vazquez.

Kees Nederhoff earns PhD for research on new methods to compute tropical cyclone induced flooding
On 20 June, Kees Nederhoff from the Netherlands successfully defended his PhD thesis on new approaches to tropical cyclone risk analyses and their implications for coastal flooding predictions and has been awarded a doctoral degree. His promotor is Professor Dano Roelvink and his copromotors are Dr. Ap van Dongeren and Dr. José Antolínez.

Sida Liu earns PhD for research on groundwater depletion in Beijing
On 25 April, Sida Liu from China has successfully defended her PhD thesis on remediating groundwater depletion in the Beijing Plain, and has been awarded a doctoral. Her promotor is Michael McClain and her co-promotor Yangxiao Zhou.

Mulele Nabuyanda earns PhD for research on the impact of minerals in Zambian wetlands
Mulele Nabuyanda from Zambia has been awarded a PhD. On 15 April, he successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled: ‘’Investigating cobalt, copper, and lead in sediments and phragmites mauritianus and Typha spp. in three Zambian wetlands. Professor Kenneth Irvine was his promotor and Dr. Peter Kelderman was his co-promotor.

Alumni blog: Navigating possibilities of the water sector in post-war Sudan
Despite war raging in their home country, Razan Elnour, Dalal Siddig, Gofran Ahmed and other recent Sudanese IHE Delft MSc alumni are busy charting a sustainable path forward for their country’s water sector. They are ready to lead a change to improve the water sector, once conditions are stable enough. In December 2023, they hosted the New Sudan Water Conference at IHE Delft and online, bringing together experts, scholars, and stakeholders to discuss rebuilding and resilience in post-conflict environments. They share ideas in this blog.

IHE Delft alumnus Tom Okurut Okia passes away
Okurut studied at IHE Delft from 1991 to 1999. His MSc and PhD degrees in Environmental Science and Technology focused on the adoption of the Framework Strategy for the Management and Development of Lake Victoria Basin by East African Community Council of Ministers as a planning tool by all Lake Victoria Stakeholders.

MSc alumna’s research aims to help flood-proof cities
With rapid urbanization, the global population that lives in urban areas is projected to increase to two-thirds by 2050. Cities, with their dense built environment and paved-over surfaces, are often ill equipped to handle the masses of water brought by increasingly frequent severe floods. There are several efforts to find solutions to this challenge, which will become more severe with climate change. An IHE Delft MSc student combines two approaches in her research and practice, finding that applying them both concurrently significantly increases their impact – and, most importantly, bridges the gap between good ideas and implementation.

Alejandra Szabo Corbacho earns PhD for research on bioreactor treatment of lipid-rich dairy wastewater
On 31 January 2024, Alejandra Szabo Corbacho successfully defended her PhD thesis and was awarded with a Doctoral degree. Her promotors were professor Jules van Lier and professor Hector Garcia Hernandez.
