Beyond reporting impacts: IHE Delft’s Water and Development Symposium promises critical dialogues

WDPP Symposium

The inaugural annual symposium of IHE Delft’s Water and Development Partnership Programme, to be held online 14 – 16 November 2023, aims to facilitate critical and reflective discussions across regions and disciplines and to cast light on the complex processes involved in addressing water-related challenges.

The event, held 14:00 – 17:00 CET each day, will be an opportunity to embrace an inclusive approach to water and development, something that requires that the voices of vulnerable and marginalized communities are amplified.

The symposium, themed "Beyond Reporting Impacts," has over 900 registered participants from over 145 countries. It offers a platform for water researchers, policy advisors, practitioners and communities to openly share insights and experiences.

"We organised this symposium mainly for our project partners in the Horn of Africa, the Middle East, and the Sahel regions, but we also welcome our wider network and others who are interested,” said Jeltsje Kemerink–Seyoum, the Programme Coordinator. “Symposium participants are invited to join the conversation on what is needed to make impacts in the water sector that go beyond mere reporting. Our goal is to inspire a collective journey towards meaningful and viable solutions that contribute to this transformation.”

The programme features themed sessions, including 'Advocacy for impact,' 'Technology for impact,' 'Diversity for impact’ and 'Sustainability of impact'. It also includes a session titled ‘Fanel—a panel on sharing failures to learn from’ during which discussions will focus on things that did not go as envisioned, and lessons from these experiences. In this reflective session, the symposium seeks to offer space for difficult stories of the complex problems faced by water professionals.

About the Water and Development Partnership Programme

Transformations to socially inclusive and ecologically sustainable practices are key to a bright future. The Water and Development Partnership Programme focuses on stimulating and catalysing such transformations within the water sector. Implemented with the support of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the programme supports organizations in non-European, low- and middle-income countries as they strengthen their capacity to manage water in sustainable and inclusive ways.
